Tenure-Stream Assistant Professor Position in the Philosophy Department

The Philosophy Department invites applications for one full-time tenure-track position, at the Assistant Professor level, beginning July 1st, 2018 (subject to final budgetary approval).

The area of specialization for the position will be Continental Social and Political Philosophy (broadly construed to include philosophy of race or gender). In addition to the expectations below, the successful candidate for this position will also have to be able to teach courses that serve the needs of the interdisciplinary B.A. program in Arts and Contemporary Studies – a program which includes a required sequence of six courses in the history of ideas, each of which is typically team-taught by two faculty members drawn from different disciplines.

Responsibilities for the position will include: teaching philosophy courses and supervising students at the undergraduate and graduate levels; contributing to the undergraduate and graduate programs including taking a lead role in curriculum development/expansion as appropriate; establishing and maintaining a strong, independent research program; and participating in the academic life of the Philosophy Department, the Faculty of Arts, and the University.

The Philosophy Department, consisting of 17 tenured and tenure-track faculty members, prides itself on the quality of its teaching and the breadth and excellence of its research in both analytic and continental approaches and traditions.

Candidates shall have completed (or expect to do so before July 2018) a PhD in Philosophy, or equivalent (e.g. PhD in Political Theory or in Social and Political Thought) and shall provide evidence of high-quality teaching and excellence in research, with an emerging scholarly record, as demonstrated by a number of achievements. Position Overview

The Department of Philosophy, Religion, and Classics at Butler University seeks to hire a tenure-track assistant professor whose area of specialization is contemporary social and political philosophy and ethics, and whose scholarly interests involve critical reflection on social justice and diversity, and applied ethics. Teaching competency in some of the following is also desirable: the history of ethics and social/political philosophy, international ethics, ethics of war and peace, philosophy of law, philosophy of race/class/gender, and ethics in non-western traditions.

In addition to the undergraduate philosophy program, candidates would be expected to regularly teach courses in Butler’s First Year Seminar and/or Global and Historical Studies programs (parts of Butler’s core curriculum), and to contribute to one or more of the college’s interdisciplinary programs: International Studies; Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies; Peace and Conflict Studies; and Science, Technology, and Environmental Studies. The candidate will also be expected to help lead the department’s Ethics minor. POST-DOC UVA – Political Philosophy, Law

The University of Virginia’s program in Political Philosophy, Policy & Law (PPL) invites applications for one, possibly two, full-time DeOlazarra Fellows for the academic year beginning August 2017, with the possibility to renew for a second academic year. Renewals are subject to availability of funding and satisfactory performance. Compensation will take the form of salary and benefits. Applicants must specialize in contemporary political theory/philosophy, particularly as it applies to the evaluation of important issues in public policy. A background in jurisprudence or legal theory is also desirable. PPL is a selective interdisciplinary undergraduate major in which fourth year students develop substantial research projects in the context of a capstone seminar. The fellow will preside over this seminar during the spring semester as well as teach one fall semester course in his or her area of interest. Applicants must be on track to receive a Ph.D. in Political Science or a related field by May 2017 and must hold a PhD by June 15, 2017.
